Faculty of Economics

Overview

Matsuyama University has the three founding principles of Truthful, Useful, and Faithful. Students will master these precepts through study in the Faculty of Economics.

The three abilities students will master

  1. The attitude for considering social phenomena
Truthful: The attitude for using the basic knowledge of economics to consider social phenomena. The attitude for actively seeking out new ways of looking at issues encountered during daily life using knowledge of economics as a guide.
  2. The ability to act based on knowledgeUseful: The attitude for acting based on knowledge of economics as a consumer. The attitude that seeks to understand, as a member of society, how your own organization (company, group, region) is placed within the economy as a whole. The attitude of organizing usable information in a scientific way and considering its meaning.
  3. The ability to explain to othersFaithful: The attitude that seeks to explain to others in a comprehensible way the phenomena that you have understood through your knowledge of economics. The attitude that seeks to use your knowledge of economics to actively cooperate with social activities.

Studying in the Faculty of Economics

Students will learn the various areas of economics, from basic to applied, both broadly and deeply.
Another feature is the on-site, community-based learning which engages with the reality of regional issues in Shikoku and Ehime.

Society is moving as the times change. To understand the complex movements within society, we offer a system for properly learning a wide range of fields within economics. Small-group specialist seminars allow students to learn about areas of interest in depth.

  1. “Specialized Basic Subjects” for properly learning about the basics of economics
When studying economics, the basics are key. Our Specialized Basic Subjects provide subjects for mastering basic knowledge from the first year. From the second year, students study in depth through theme-based learning in our Specialist Seminars. Through these studies, students will acquire a basic knowledge of economics and master the ability to set issues on various economic issues, and to collect data based on these, analyze it, give presentations, and write papers.
  2. “Specialized Applied Subjects” for properly learning about all fields of economics
Economics has a range of different fields, each of which has a “system” that ranges from basic to applied. The Faculty of Economics has six “tracks,” creating a system by which students can study each field thoroughly. By learning the knowledge of each field in a systematic way, students can master the specialist knowledge needed to observe issues faced by contemporary society from an economic perspective and solve them.
  3. “Regional Specialist Subjects” for thinking realistically about regional issues
First-year students are offered Economy and Issues in Matsuyama City, while second-year and later students are offered Economy and Issues in Ehime Prefecture as well as Urban Development Studies, along with other courses for considering regional issues. Students will master the ability to understand the economies of Shikoku and Ehime through taking these classes, and be able to contribute to better regional development.
  4. Learning international economics with a focus on Asia
Internationalization does not stop. Learning about the economies of East Asia, and China in particular, will become a major strength once students become full members of society. Our Shanghai Training is not just about classroom study, but through actual on-site training in Shanghai, students will hone their international awareness in a contemporary way.
  5. Small-group specialist seminars
We offer staged, systematic learning systems to allow students to gradually get used to their specialist fields from an early stage. Students will be allocated to small-group classes and seminars in each year, with the goal of creating friends through university life and encouraging communication between faculty and students.

– Post-graduate study by skipping a year
Faculty of Economics students can obtain a master’s degree in a total of five years if they skip a year to enter the Economics Graduate Courses in the Graduate School at Matsuyama University. In addition, there is a course where graduate students with excellent performance can complete their master’s degree in one year.
